  • Lots of mystery and intrigue!

Big thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for this ARC!! When detectives Max Craigie and Janie Calder arrive at a murder scene, they soon discover this murder is part of a blood feud between two Scottish families that stretches back to the 1800s. I loved this book!! The location felt authentic and Max and Janie were terrific partners. Dead Man's Grave had my favorite things: a police procedural with lots of mystery and intrigue, AND a sweet dog named Nutmeg! Max is a bit of a troubled soul who has PTSD from his time in Afganistan. Janie is a brilliant, young detective who is considered "weird" by the others at the station. Put them together and their broken parts made a whole! This is a compelling book and one I highly recommend. I'll definitely read it again and I am happy this is the start of a series!

  • One of the best!

One of the best books I have read this year and one of the best in this genre I have read for a very long time! I have never read anything by Neil Lancaster before but the blurb sounded right up my street so gave it a punt and I'm so glad I did because what a brilliant start to a series. Max is a very interesting character with a strong back story which most definitely adds to the story as a whole. There are some dark moments interspersed with lighter times and I particularly like the relationship Max has with his boss, Ross, and colleague, Janie, which felt authentic. What can I say ... brilliant characters, gripping story line, excellent pace, full of tension and action featuring historical feuds, revenge, dirty coppers, gangsters and all set in beautiful Scotland ... just a fantastic book all round really and I can't wait for the next instalment. Thank you HQ Digital and NetGalley for my copy in return for an honest, unbiased and unedited review.

  • Thrilling new police procedural!

From the opening scene in a remote Scottish graveyard to the breathtaking conclusion in a Glasgow park, the action never lets up in Dead Man’s Grave, the unputdownable first police procedural in the new Max Craigie series. The Murder Coast is next and it can’t come fast enough. After a justified shooting in London, Max Craigie has joined Police Scotland. His first assignment in Serious Crimes is a missing person case. Tam Hardie has not been seen for days. Tam Hardie is also the kingpin behind the drug trade in Scotland. His sons will not be easily satisfied. It is a surprisingly easy case to solve but it will lead to a complicated progression of deaths linked to a 300 yearly feud. Neil Lancaster retired after 25 years as a detective on the Metropolitan Police. His experience shows in Dead Man’s Grave. The characters, especially Janie Calder, come more alive with each chapter. The mystery is carefully plotted with slowly escalating tension. The conclusion is satisfying and makes you want more. 5 stars. Thank you to NetGalley, HQ Digital and Neil Lancaster for this ARC.

  • Amazing and highly recommended!

This is an amazing book which is the first in a new Scottish Crime series featuring DS Max Craigie as the main character. I really loved the book and I found the characters, the setting and the story fantastic. I can't wait to read more of this author's work. I would really love to see his books come out on TV. I feel that this author will be very successful with his new series and I can't wait to see where it all goes. This is one of my most favourite books of this year and I highly recommend it!
