    An aptly titled book

A truly heartwarming book. The examples of the military war dogs and their handlers honour all MWDs. The service they provide while on duty and the reminder of home they present when not on duty cannot be diminished. The therapy they provide, especially for wounded veterans training dogs for other wounded veterans, is invaluable. The adoptions are also special - witness Dino, living with the family of his handler who was killed in action, or Carly who became his therapy dog after his handler lost a leg on duty. Then there are the the interactions between the dogs and the public, whether it is the Paws for Reading program or winning hearts and minds in Afghanistan. The civilian dogs who welcome home returning servicemen and women also rightly get a mention. Chapter 9, titled "Stand Down", is both happy and sad: happy when we vicariously witness a MWD's retirement ceremony but sad when we read of MWDs which have had to have been euthanased because of cancer. This book is a remarkable testament to all these dogs.
