  • A puzzle to be solved

This is a detective novel that has various threads, making it a giant puzzle to be solved. The relationship between Sam and Gail takes off immediately as Sam rushes in to protect Gail when disaster faces her. Despite his odd family, or because of it, Sam is a strong hero as he takes the steps necessary to keep Gail safe. Her kinfolk may not have been flesh and blood, but they were spiritually and emotionally closer than any family. Gail is therefore devastated when betrayal raises its ugly head and she is left with the choice to protect those she loves in a decisive manner. The romance between the main characters builds slowly and one could feel Sam's distress as he had to keep his distance from Gail for fear that she would be drawn into his case. Her confusion and difficulty in understanding Sam's hot and cold behaviour made my heart ache for her. I enjoyed the spikes of humour that popped up from time to time and Vi had a special place in the story. I found the plot difficult to follow at times due to quick changes in scenes and a certain amount of backtracking by the different players. There were also a number of characters and keeping them in perspective took some concentration. However, once I got used to the author's style of writing the plot made sense. The novel is suspenseful, romantic, well written and is a standalone that comes to a beautiful conclusion.
