  • Moby Dick like adventure for children

As a card-carrying-carnivore and recreational fisherman, it took me a little while to warm to the theme of this novel. But warm I did and it didn't take too long to get into the story and I found myself actually feeling for the characters. It was thought provoking in moments, not enough for me to hang up the fishing rod but still the cogs were spinning. I could have done with a bit more swashbuckling but on the whole I enjoyed the adventure.

  • Adventure, pirates and a moral.

I love whales and pirates and after reading this book, vegetarian pirates that hunt whalers. I liked that Draden was just an everyday person with no special powers, just a desire to do the right thing. I definitely felt a sense of adventure about this novel, as they left on the ship and started to experience whaling and being hunted by pirates.

  • Abit slow to start but gets going at sea

Definitely like the suspense and growing tension. Draden is just trying to do the right thing but is constantly put in harsh situation. Took a little while to get on the ship but after that it was off on an adventure. Would have given it 5 stars if the start was had a bit more action. I like how things kept changing and Draden and Blair having new situations to deal with. It is a short book, could have been a bit longer, more adventures in the middle.

  • Short, thematic and punchy

This is like Moby-Dick-Lite. A whaling adventure with animal-rights themes. Melville weaves several themes together where this is a lot more focus. Not a bad thing, it is a YA novel afterall. I enjoyed the theme and how tortured Draden was at times with the decisions he was wrestling with. There's moment of humor, adventure, friendship and heroism. It is a short read, but the novel keeps on point.

  • Teen "Heart of the sea" book; Whaling Adventure

This book reminded me the Ron Howard movie "Heart of the sea", but more a teen version. I enjoyed the cast of characters, they all seemed to have their own angel and motives. The bartender stole his scene for mine. The pirates are always ominous and threatening to strike, loved the tension of Draden's journey and his ultimate decision.
