  • Scandalous!

A tantalizing and charming historical romance! Helping the less fortunate is what Lady Elizabeth does. It makes her happy. She's one and twenty. She's decided not to marry. She'll continue aiding her sister-in-law with the classes for disadvantaged women. Now, she's added helping war widows and their children. She's found the perfect house they can reside in,. She just has to finalize the deal with her brothers best friend... Philip Ponsby, the Duke of Aldridge, has returned home after five years. He can't wait to see his friends. He's ready to take his place in society; he'll serve in politics and work to end the war, marry and produce an heir. First he needs a bath after his travels. Elizabeth visits the duke to request he donate the house for the families. When she walks in the room... Scandalous! What a beginning! The rest of the story is just as good. Haven't read this author before, but I will now! Received this book free for an honest review.

  • Well written

I do so love a good historical novel and Cheryl Bolen knows exactly how to write one with the right amount of romance, angst, mystery, a villain, secrets and most important, family values. Elizabeth walks straight into an innocent and compromising situation with Phillip and as a result they have to get married. They gradually fall in love but are both reluctant to be the first to admit this. Ms Bolen weaves a beautiful love story which captures the dress, mannerisms, family values and romanticism in England during the Napoleonic war era. I truelly value a well written story and this author has definitely delivered one.

  • Great historical romance

The second book in the House of Haverstock series follows the life and unexpected marriage of the sister of the Marquess of Haverstock, the main character in the first book. (Please note, however, that this is a stand alone book and it is not necessary to read the first book to follow along and love this book.) Elizabeth has decided that she will remain unmarried and becomes involved in helping war widows and their children find suitable accommodations. This task leads her into a compromised situation that ultimately ends to an unexpected marriage to the Duke of Aldridge. The marriage is not a love match but Elizabeth hopes to be a good wife to her husband and he has decided to become more political and to help his wife with her cause. The interplay between the two, who have known each other for years, is believable for the time, although somewhat disconcerting to someone in the 21st century. The political discussions may seem somewhat dry for a romance but create a wonderful sense of history and deal with problems that continue to this day. Although near the end of the book the Duke exhibits some less than gentlemanly behaviour, the addition not only helps the story to proceed but proves that even a hero can have less than stellar characteristics. This is a beautifully written happily ever after story that develops believable characters and creates a book where the reader feels like they are living the story and the time - to me, a mark of a great historical romance
