  • Too Vintage for today's Reader

The prose was heavy, the chief character a take off of Paul Temple. And the misogynistic attitude displayed by all the male characters, infuriating. Not an author I will read again.

  • A stirring tale.

A thing of its time. A story, lliterally from the past, from the shadows even. Gives a very good idea of the early construction of this kind of tale. I have to say, I enjoyed the 'old fashionedness' of it, the strong impression given of how things were. Truly very good, all gratitude is due to the finding and the resurrection of this wonderful writer and his tales.

  • Dusty Death

I enjoyed this book! It was interesting to read a mystery that was solved with no electronics for help other than telegrams or pay phones?

  • Surprisingly good resurrection of a lost author

Excellent period international crime story with all the taste, smell and grit of it's era. Now closing on 100 years old it is still fresh and relevant. Like reading a Sherlock Holmes but with more modern equipment: cars, trains and telephones. The language is a little stilted in places and attitudes to women and 'foreigners' can be painful - if chronologically accurate - so four stars.

  • A good old fashioned read.

Very enjoyable and very English. Set between the world wars all characters very polite, very reasonable and logical - even the bad guys. Although the detective can be a bit patronizing, the book is so fast paced with lots of twists and turns that it’s only a minor issue. I’m looking forward to reading the next one in the series.
