This would have to be one of the more disturbing books I've ever read. It's very difficult to explain why without dropping spoilers, so I'll be as vague as I can be without being totally unhelpful. Put it this way: while it's easy to see from the start that there's definitely another side to the story we're being told, the deft way in which this is achieved leaves one racing through pages of a life story as if they were the climax of a thriller. We feel for Faulks' protagonist; we laugh with him at the follies of humankind, but all the way through there are hints at a truth we would rather not confront. And as we expect from Mr Faulks, we get a portrait of an era, of its music, its people, its successes and rank, awful failings, through a lens that, while distorted, nevertheless has clarity, wit and insight.
