  • A poignant war time novel

This is a very moving and poignant novel set in both London during the days of the bombing and on the island of Malta. It was fascinating to read about life in Malta as it's not something I know about and also to read about London from the perspective of a society girl. Filled with quirky British humour it is both funny and moving. Beautiful.

  • Not what i expected

It was highly recommended by a friend and while i enjoyed it, it didn't live up to the billing

  • Thoroughly ennoyed it.

I am from Malta and found that the plot parts happening in Malta gave a good rendition of the setting and scene which occurred on the island in 1941 and 1942. My grandfather told me plenty of his war stories and adventures, so much so that I felt a connection with the characters. Another great novel by Chris Cleave.

  • London, the Blitz; Malta, the siege

The part of the novel which takes place in Malta is interesting as I don't believe that aspect of World War II has been dealt with very often in fiction or documentaries. I found the author's style in the dialogues to be very exasperating: bantering, witticisms, English humour gone overboard, not the way people would speak naturally and not suitable for a war novel. Because of this annoying aspect I cannot give this novel more than three stars.
