  • Loved the heroine!

This book does an outstanding job of balancing a fun heroine Emmaline with a serious subject matter on a topic that was little understood at the time that the story takes place. Emmaline has been betrothed to Lord Drake since she was a girl of 5 and Drake was a more mature 13 but the two have rarely met. Drake has returned from the war a changed man who tries to hide from his demons by partaking in women and drink. Although Emmaline is hurt by his actions, she is a woman of strength who dreams of a love match and decides to try to get a commitment of marriage from Drake. Sometimes her actions are hilarious, other times the results are sad. The author has done a very good job of creating a strong female character who the reader feels for and although as the reader I initially disliked Drake’s character, ultimately I had sympathy and empathy for his struggles. The heat between the hero and heroine is strong and eventually a believable romance develops. I laughed and I cried when reading this book and I am looking forward to following the secondary characters introduced in this first book in the series in future stories.

    Thanks for your feedback!
