This novel is breathtaking and downright baffling at times. Its for the most advanced fantasy readers. I'm still flummoxed by a number of subplots. Erikson throws you right in at the deep end. There is very little character development and I can only assume that we learn more about the vast array of characters in the series as the story develops. The novel starts off brilliantly but does get bogged down in complexity and so it requires your full attention. However, I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

  • So many fantasy novels seem to work on the premise that everything happening in their world is all bound up in the actions of a single protagonist and can be neatly tied off. The Malazan Book Of The Fallen makes no such claims. The world is huge, the timescale vast, the characters richly varied and complex. Not every story thread can or will be completed, and you are always aware that this is too grand a world to be neatly summarised. A great start to a great series, and one that never disappoints.

  • Worth the effort

Takes a little to get into it as there is a lot going on, but enjoyed the read and will be trying out the next in the series
