  • Good read

I really enjoyed this compilation two good reads which are different, but they both capture the feel of the period although basically romance and not everyone's choice for students trying to understand and get a feel for era concerned non better

  • Not what it says on the tin

I read another novel by this author, "The Grand Sophy", and mostly enjoyed that so I thought I'd try this set of her novels. While the first in this set, about Lord Rule and his impetuous bride, was somewhat entertaining and at heart a romance, neither of those things hold true for the second, The Spanish Wife. About 80 percent of the story deals with the Napoleonic wars and the horrors thereof; the "romance" is between the 26 year old Harry Smith and his 14 (!!!) year old bride, the young aristocratic Spanish orphan fleeing the rape and pillaging of her home town. No. Just no.
