    Ghost Empire

An excellent, informative and captivating read. Highly recommended for any ancient and modern history student... simply to help bridge the gap between one and the other.

A great read which I could not put down.

I knew little about the Byzantine Empire before reading this book. It contains a wealth of detailed information, it has been well researched and is written in the style of a travelogue which keeps the material fresh and alive right through the book. It gives very good insights into the Muslim and Christian faiths, the divisions within each and the divisions between them, all done in a style which kept me wanting to turn the pages until, alas, it was finished. The author is a very good commentator and interviewer on the ABC Radio network in Australia. His skills are very obvious in this book.

    Istanbul

A sweeping and thorough account of the history of Byzantium/ Istanbul told with sympathy, clarity and insight. A truly fascinating history that has often been ignored in modern times.

    A great read!

A thoroughly enjoyable read. I loved the interweaving of the story of Richard and Joe's visit to Istanbul with the story (history) of Constantinople.

    Ghost Empire

Written words that "sound" as if the author were speaking directly to the reader. A clear and interesting presentation.
