  • Almost Perfect

This one was a challenge. On the one hand, I absolutely love the characters and the series as a whole. I think it's fun, sexy, exciting, and packed with magic and generally great characters. And I even agree that this is a satisfying conclusion to our beloved witch and huntsman. But it wasn't entirely perfect. I love the characters. Lou is a true heathen and I will always miss her tough, trouble-making antics. I think she had the best arc in the entire book, her power soaring to truly incredible levels. Coco, Beau, and Cecile all had their moments in the spotlight as well. I'm actually hoping there will be more of Coco and Beau in the future, since they were so much fun together. There were new and familiar characters who developed with what little time they had, and I was glad to see them. As for Reid, well... I do still love his stubborn loyal heart. I think he did come a long, tooth-and-nail way. But. There was a section of the book that changed his character and made him infuriating for a large chunk of the story. It felt like his entire development had been reversed. I really enjoyed the first half of the book. Mahurin took her characters to dazzling new locations and pulled out all the magical stops. It was intense, dramatic, and filled with shocking moments. The climax was the same, with everyone fighting and pure chaos reigning. My problem was with the gap between the middle and the climax. The ground was just too familiar, and I was thinking back to SERPENT & DOVE, realizing I had read this romance before. I knocked off a star because there was no elevation to Lou and Reid's romance, no fresh challenge for them to overcome that didn't put them right back at the beginning. That said, I did enjoy the book. Even during its darker moments and the ending that made my heart ache, I did find the writing to be solid and the plot itself to move smoothly. Even for all its rocky moments and my gripes, I do genuinely think Mahurin has great talent and will continue to write incredible stories. I will miss Lou, Reid, and the rest of the gang. They are one of a kind, and I hope to see more of this world in the future.

  • No dissapointment here!

Truly a great way to end a journey that brought readers along every high and low the characters faced, leaving you contented in only the way a good book can. If you stuck around until the third book then that is answer enough.
