    Made me sleepless

This book was catching from the first page and I couldn't put it down until I finished it. It tells the story of a bosnian family during the siege on Sarajevo. The family gets ripped apart when they decide to get out 2 of their daughters in an evacuation convoi for children. Told from the perspectives of the oldest daughter Atka that remains in Sarajevo and Hana, almost 13 when she and Nadia get evacuated, this book makes clear how different life was in Zagreb, just a few hours away from war torn Sarajevo. Eventually, after many challenges and loss of life, there's a bittersweet happy end, but I won't say more. Just so much: you won't be able to put that book down before you finish it, you will cry, laugh and admire the strength of the people in Sarajevo who still tried to find a bit of normality in the midst of the horror that came from the hills around Sarajevo. I was deeply impressed by the memoirs of the sisters. Just don't expect that you will be able to put it down before the last page.

Do Not Read This in a Public Place

Unless you are OK with bawling your eyes out in public…. Although some of the writing seems a bit clumsy in places, the story itself is so incredibly compelling that it is easily one of my favourite books. Some of the other reviews give a good synopsis of the story, so I won't repeat it. Just read the book.
