  • Enthralling Action Packed Read

Whilst reading this book it became apparent that it remained faithful to Halo lore. And little details like the underslung grenade launch for the Assault Rifle makes me wonder if the upcoming Halo: Infinite may have a similar addition. Really liked how John felt younger in this book and his character development was well thought out. He is turning into the battle hardened "demon" from the Halo games. The characters that interact with him however could have shown more realistic reactions in regards to their disposition towards John. For example rarely was it covered on that they were awed or fearful of his presence. Afterall he is a over two meter supersoldier with massive power-armour. Too many characters treated him with 'indifference' and it felt like a less realistic portrayal. The intrigue and mechanisms of the insurrectionists was well covered on. Although I've more fun reading a Halo novel where backstabbing is less prevalent. Which is why I still hold Halo: The Fall of Reach, Halo: The Flood and Halo: First Strike as amongst my favourite Halo reads. The strong emphasis on political intrigue and backstabbing is somewhat annoying and in my opinion this is ultimately something that hurt Halo 5 story campaign and why many Halo fans were not very pleased with that game. I'm pleased that we are finally getting more Master Chief stories as I was dismayed when we got no novels covering off on Master Chief's exploits for each of the Halo games after Halo CE.

  • Another brilliant Halo story

Great novel. Gives another great insight into blue team and the beginnings of John-117 as master chief.

  • Great addition to the Halo universe.

I really enjoy the Halo series particularly the full length books with stories featuring the Master Chief and his Blue team members. This book tells of how John became the Master Chief and the betrayals he encountered. The action is great with very realistic descriptions of space and infantry battles as well as wisecracking humour from the characters.
