  • The sadness of war

This is the story of a real hero. The tale is somewhat different to many books about WW1 and it is told with a modesty and self effacing charm. Sort of "Oh I went out and took a trench and it was not too bad at all" So he gets his VC for what he sees as nothing! It also has a love story and it too is dealt with in a simple mater of fact manner. There is humour, and sadness and the reality of war. Maxwell like so many was deeply affected by the war and sadly found life in peace time hard to deal with. I am humbled by this book and humbled by all of those who experienced the horror or war.

    Thanks for your feedback!
