  • An outstanding crime thriller

I have to admit up front, that I had not read any of Carla’s work before. But, I had read so many positive reviews on all her books, that when the invitation to join in on the blog tour was extended for Her Last Mistake, I jumped at the chance. I used to have a rule that I would never read a book from a series unless I had started with book one. Before starting my blog, I just couldn’t imagine jumping on the bandwagon with the second book let alone the sixth, which is where Her Last Mistake fits in with the series. Having this rule in place, I was missing out on so many great books that I decided to break the rule. So the question is, how did I go starting with the sixth book in the Detective Gina Harte series? Read on to find out. Carla has created a thrilling plot that drew me in immediately after reading the blurb. I mean how could I not be with this opening sentence “Dressed in a sage green bridesmaid dress, and smiling for pictures, Holly is the happiest she’s ever been. Hours later, Holly is dead.” It is such a great hook line and creates the sinister vibe of the story perfectly. I won’t rehash the plot in this review, as I don’t want to inadvertently give something away and the blurb gives enough of what you need to go in with. I instantly connected with Detective Gina Harte. What a strong character Carla has created. A force to be reckon with, she just comes to life through the pages and has been written beautifully. Although not without her flaws, she is what I like to describe as perfectly imperfect. Even though this was my first introduction to her and I have missed a lot of her back story, it wasn’t hard to pick up that she is a tortured soul, who has her own struggles and inner demons to contend with, while trying to balance her work life from her family and personal life. Carla put me instantly at ease with enough background information for me to follow what was going on, so it most definitely can be read as a stand-alone. Through writing that is so engaging, emotive and vivid, Carla has a new fan in me and she has made me want to go back and read the other five books in the series as well as future books. Her Last Mistake is a gripping read, that will have you on the edge of your seat as Carla takes you on one wild ride, that is full of tension and suspense. Right from the prologue, she never takes her foot off the accelerator until the end and I absolutely loved it! It was an absolute pleasure to read and review Her Last Mistake which I highly recommend. Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Carla Kovach for allowing me to read an advanced copy of Her Last Mistake which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

  • Great detective work by Gina Harte!

I love, love, love Carla Kovach's Detective Gina Harte series. This is book #6 in the series and they just keep getting better and better. DI Gina Harte is supposed to be spending the week with her daughter Hannah and her granddaughter, Gracie, but her ex-lover DCI Chris Briggs calls her in to work on a murder case where bridesmaid Holly Long is murdered at the wedding reception of golden couple Ed and Kerry Powell. The story is full of twists and turns and just when I thought I had it figured out, I was wrong. Author Kovach does an excellent job writing police procedural books. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC of this thrilling book in exchange for an honest review. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

  • Great addition to the series

Her Last Mistake by Carla Kovach is the 6th in the Detective Gina Harte series. First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. Series Background: (Warning – May contain spoilers from previous books) DI Gina Harte works homicides. Her team consists of: DS Jacob Driscoll, DC Harry O’Connor and DC Paula Wyre, with a lot of assistance from PC Smith, and now PC Kapoor. Gina is a stubborn lady, and a determined detective. She has had a rough life, which has led to an uneasy relationship with her daughter and grand-daughter.  It has also led to a lack of real friends, and an on-again/off-again relationship with her boss, DCI Chris Briggs. It is not common knowledge that her husband was abusive, and no one knows that she helped him fall to his death many years ago. My Synopsis: (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions) When a bridesmaid is murdered at her best friends wedding reception, Gina is called back from her brief holiday.  She quickly finds that there there are many suspects, a few that she would like to lock behind bars for any reason.  But there is no evidence. Holly was part of the "Awesome Foursome", as they liked to be called.  They had met in grade school, and their friendship lasted.  Francisca, Lilly and Kerry don't understand who would want Holly dead.  But Holly had a secret, and that secret got her killed. Gina's relationship with her daughter Hannah is tested, as she was meant to be spending time with her family.  It seems Hannah may never understand her mother's job.  It also seems that Hannah's choice of friends does not ease her mothers concerns either. My Opinions: This is a really good police procedural.  Gina has a past that she struggles with, and her relationship with her daughter suffers because of it.  Well, that and the fact that every time they try to spend some quality time together, Gina's phone rings and she is called out on a case. Gina is a very determined detective, and everything else gets set aside when she is on a case (see above).  But she really cares about people. The plot was a little dark, and talk about the games people play! Kovach always adds a variety of characters, each which could be a suspect, and many of which I do not like.  It makes it interesting, and this is the second book in a row that I didn't have a clue as to who killed Holly...or anyone else.  My guess was sooooo wrong.  I love that in a book. Definitely recommend this series, but you have to read them in order.

  • Average Procedural

I've read several books in the series. They are OK. The stories are OK. The characters are OK. The dialogue is OK. Ok, sometimes the dialogue is sometimes ridiculous. If you want to read a procedural and you need every little thing explained in a conversation that I seriously hope most cops don't have to have with each other, then this is probably a good one to pick up. I found myself getting bored and skimming most conversations. Especially the personal and whiny ones.

  • A Superb Instalment

Carla Kovach’s new mystery thriller, Her Last Mistake is an exhilarating, shocking read! Struggling with drama within her family and haunted by her past, DI Gina Harte is presented with a chilling new case. Holly Long, Francesca Carter, Lilly Hill and Kerry Powell, collectively known as the Awesome Foursome, have been close friends since their school days and are celebrating at Kerry's wedding reception. What should be a night of joy and great merriment soon turns to tragedy and shock when Holly is found by one of her friends, dead in her hotel room. Who could possibly have wanted to kill Holly? As I became embroiled in the thickening plot I couldn't put this novel down, and I just had to keep turning those pages. Feisty and down-to-earth, Gina is a brilliant Detective Inspector. The supporting characters were an interesting assortment; some I liked, others I wasn't so keen on, but they all had a valuable contribution to make to the story-line. The great pacing by Carla Kovach also aided my enjoyment of the story. I suspected several of the characters, yet as is often the case, narrowing them down to just one proved to be quite challenging and I failed to identify the actual perpetrator. Told from differing points of view, the story twisted and turned throughout the chapters, optimising the tension levels as the story propelled its way towards the revealing denouement. If you love a good detective series and a dark thriller with plenty of surprises and misdirection, then Her Last Mistake is for you. I confidently recommend this novel. I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Bookouture via NetGalley and this review is my unbiased opinion.
