  • A Hard Fought Love

What an incredible story full of clan wars, spies, unrequited love, kidnapping, perilous rescues, death, survival and romance. Lady Ludella Howard is an Englishwoman who walks to the beat of her own drum. Her parents have arranged for her to go to court and find a suitable husband. When a group of highlanders passing through stay at her castle for the night, she finds out they are the soldiers of her sister Brooke's husband, Laird Sinclair. In order to avoid going to court, Ludella hides in their cart. When they discover her and find out who she is, they decide to take her with them to her sister. Along the way the Sinclair men run into their ally the Sutherlands. Ranulph Sutherland is their leader and heir to their Laird. Immediately something transpires between Ludella and Ranulph. Some is unpleasant, some is pleasant, some is confusing and some is ridiculous. Being in the Highlands brings danger and Ludella's life as well as Ranulph's younger three-year-old brother is kidnapped by their enemy. There are too many skirmishes and loss of loved ones that Ludella realizes her shortcomings and how she affects others. It was sad when her dearest childhood friend died trying to save her. Then she had to deal with Ranulph's thick skull. He did not have a mother growing up so he has little idea on how to woo a lady. Instead they completely frustrate each other. This is an action adventure romance that moves at a quick pace. It is well written. The personalities of the characters are believable and realistic. I was especially touched in how the author wrote the scenes for the little two or three-year-old boy. An excellent story and a must read. I highly recommend it.
