    A good start...

This is a well written and intelligent book, clearly a modern version of Antigone. While many critics laud this as a masterwork, I feel the story had just started to get interesting when it ended. This author is clearly very talented and I think she could have added significantly to the fable of Antigone, giving it even further life and vitality within the modern lexicon. Kamila Shamsie has the gift of describing a culture which differs from my own in a warmly human way. In this work she describes the commonality between us as a species, rather than the artificial preconceptions which arise from ignorance or the lack of cultural norms. I feel this book is -“A good start...” - hers is a world I would love to spend more time in, questioning my own preconceptions and thinking about the great moral questions which, in some way or another , impact upon us all.

    Captivating and Brilliant.

Kamila's writing style is captivating in such a different way to any of the contemporary writers that the words seem to hang in the air around you while you read them. The effect of those words echoing in your surrounding for a while even after you've put down the book. I would have loved the novel to continue; however it was a novel that leaves you wanting for more on purpose. A must read.

    So good!

I enjoyed so many aspects of this novel: Eammon's sense of humour; Eammon's and Aneeka's love story; and a believeable story about how a naive young man could be lured in to ISIS. The writing was top notch. A thoroughly enjoyable, if ultimately sad, read.
