Love in a time of war

This is a well written, exciting romance that takes place during the carnage of the French Revolution. In a time when friends become enemies, Verity finds herself caught up in espionage in a desperate attempt to save her father's life. Tasked with delivering Anthony Beaumont to the French authorities, Verity makes contact with the Viscount, only to find herself strongly attracted to him. When the Viscount takes off for France without Verity's intervention, she realises that he is about too walk into a trap and together with his daughter Henrietta, they also set off for France. Fortunately they are observed by Foreign Office operative Christian Hartley, who realising that Henrietta has an impetuous nature, follows on behind them in order to do any necessary damage control. France is volatile at best, and nothing goes to plan. Christian has his work cut out for him and discovers that whilst Henrietta may give him gray hairs, she is in fact resourceful and quite able to pull her weight. I think most people would agree that the French Revolution was inevitable, however the atrocities committed in the name of freedom were beyond barbaric. It is in this climate that the Viscount looks for his brother-in-law and Verity has to deal with betrayal. Christian is a charming level headed hero and his protective stance over Henrietta wins the reader’s heart. The romance does come to a happy ending but it is laced with sadness for the lost lives and the recognition that in a time of unrest, loyalties can be suspect and when the right pressure is exerted, one will do anything for those you love. I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily post this review. This is my honest review.

A Romantic, Exciting French Rev. Adventure

In 1792 young Henrietta "Hetta" (beloved daughter of Lord Beaumont) visits a gypsy fortune teller. She's warned about danger and death in her future. Off to London for her first season, spunky Hetta sees a handsome man ride by on a horse. His smile entrances her, but she's told that Christin Hartley is a rake and not worth her time. If you think this is your typical romance set-up, you'll be surprised and shocked. But most of all glued to this compelling story. Christian Hartley is charmed by young Henrietta, but he's a government spy who must sneak into France to rescue an émigré family. His life is one of constant danger. In France, the French Revolution rages and actress Verity is ordered by the notorious Danton to travel to England to seduce Lord Beaumont and bring him back to France. Verity's father is in prison and Danton won't release him until she does this "favor" for him. Verity seduces Beaumont, but falls for him, and now she's torn. Beaumont loves this vivacious actress, but could he lower himself to marry a woman of the stage? Now he must travel to France to save his brother-in-law. A rollicking adventure begins when all these threads twist together in a France controlled by bloodthirsty revolutionaries. Hetta and Verity are resourceful women who at first dislike one another but end up in life or death situations. No one is whom they seem and this novel kept me guessing as well as anxious to discover what happens next.
