Too long...and no crimes to solve

I am going through the Gunther series in order and have found this to be the weakest so far. Philip Kerr is a fine writer, but this is too long and, whilst it contains a lot of crimes, none need to be solved - something of a weakness for a crime thriller. The twists in the plot were so well telegraphed, I ended up waiting for the story to catch up with where I already was. In this way, when there was a crime to be investigated, it was blindingly obvious who was to blame. Given that the BG series does have a thread running through it, it is probably important to read if following the series through. However, if you just want a one-off crime novel, this is not a good introduction to Kerr's writing.
