    Doesn't quite deliver

This Victorian mystery starts of interesting enough, with our lead character India Black closing up her "den of iniquity", the Lotus House. One if her clients drops dead and she reluctantly becomes involved in espionage, teaming up with the mysterious Mr. French to save England. India is a great character, but somehow lacks depth. Her narrative is funny but the sarcasm doesn't let up, making it rather tiresome halfway through the book. French is rather inept as a spy and the two mess up one task after another until the plot feels stretched. I would likely not pick up the second book in the series.
