  • A moving book about a life

This is not a typical Mankell thriller but a moving account of a period in a lonely middle aged man's life when he finds some contentment.

  • Italian Shoes

A sedate perceptive & at times quite profound stroll through the human or at least of the male condition

  • Haunting sense of place.

I read this novel some years ago after a visit to Sweden and spending some time in the archipelago and a long road trip across the nordic landscape. Both feature in the book, especially the archipelago, which is where the dysfunctional main character lives on a small island. The sense of place is haunting and lingers strongly with me still and the slow character development draws you in and fascinates. This story remains sharply etched in my consciousness while many other novels have come and gone so you can't ask much more than that. For those who have read Henning Mankell before it is worth noting that this is not a crime story like many of his other novels.

    Thanks for your feedback!
