  • Fast-paced Space Opera

The author is obviously a big fan of science fiction epics and this space opera tries to give the reader everything and more. The story was fast-paced and didn't get bogged down with info-dumps, but I think he made a big mistake by making his lead character such a jerk. There was obviously a need to get Kaine out onto the Scimitar somehow, but I think there were a dozen better ways to do it. Just the admiral's disdain for Kaine's father could have been enough. Hayden for most of the story is an honourable and conscientious person so it goes against type that he could have been such a jerk in the academy. I found that he felt sorry for himself a tad too much as well. I had a problem with there being a few too many coincidences as well. Stella just happens to be a one-in-a-million empath. She just happens to get exposed to radiation that enhances her abilities. This just happens to affect the evil aliens like a drug. The first piece of wreckage the crew looks at is the one where Stella and her father are hiding. By and large an entertaining read and it ends in such a way as to appear pretty final. I know there are more stories in the series, but I think that something pretty ridiculous would have to happen for the adventure to leap back into space from where it is right now. So I think I'll take a pass on the rest of the series.

  • A good read that deserves a companion

A space opera about a newly graduated cadet who works his way, via various mishaps, to become captain to command a near rag-tag crew who accomplish great things. Of course there are aliens, battles, FTL flight, rescues, love interests, and whatnot. The story fits together well with only a few convenient coincidences and makes for a good read. While it can stand alone, i'm looking forward to the inevitable sequel. (Are you listening Mr Pruden?)

  • Finally, a space opera!

Author Pruden has been hinting at this for quite a while, so it was with great anticipation that I sat down to read the first installment (I was given an advance copy for review). The story begins with a young punk who is sent off (i.e. Sanctioned) on an unenviable first assignment as a result of his misbehavior. As the story unfolds, we get space battles, mysterious aliens, and heroics – everything escape literature should be. Those like me who are reluctant to start a new series when the first book appears need not worry: there is a satisfying (but surprising) conclusion, but with obvious hooks to continue the story. All in all, a very satisfying read; I will be reading it again very soon and am looking forward to the next installment, which Pruden assures us will be coming soon.

  • A good easy read sci-fi story with lots of action.

This is an interesting and fast moving story. It held my attention throughout. I liked the fast action and the strength of the characters, especially Hayden Caine and the captain. I am looking forward to the next chapter of Caine's escapades.
