    The flood

Pullman has written another gripping, fascinating story - this one giving us Lyra's disaster-strewn early beginnings and the two young people who battle enormous difficulties to protect and save her. The power of loyalty, love and honesty bring the story to its conclusion and leave the reader impatient for the next book in the trilogy.

I love Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy; it takes the reader on an adventure which begins with excitement, action and unanswered questions - and ends with mature, even philosophical, bittersweet drama. La Belle Sauvage has none of the above. The pacing is frustratingly slow - less happens in this entire novel than in a few chapters from Northern Lights. I had hoped for engaging new mysteries and characters in the same world; instead I felt like I was expected to be so impressed by the mentions of familiar concepts & characters that I would overlook the lack of anything exciting and new. The story manages enough suspense that it kept me reading to the end - but that's all I can really say in its favour.

Really enjoyable, paused only to recharge the Kobo

A lovely elegaic read. Dreamy in places, but interspersed with a violence which is shocking in context. So much more satisfying than "His Dark Materials".
