More literary than most of its genre. Language use has impact.

  • The Roots of Scottish Crime Noir

I greatly enjoyed this novel. The noir style of Ian Rankin clearly has its roots in the Laidlaw trilogy. McIlvanney lovingly and respectfully describes the character of Glasgow and its people at that time. This is in no way a cozy mystery. One has to slow down when reading to think and savour the language and the mood.

What a load of rubish, worst book by far I have ever read, thats a lie, because I gave up on it after a few chapters, could'nt waste my time on this book. Must remember not to get anything by McIlvanney again
