  • A small town thriller well drawn

There were credibility elements about this story that stretched things a little too far. I don't want to give them away to prospective readers but one early example involved Rose's ambition to be a journalist. She didn't seem to have any understanding that just applying for jobs or cadetships without any supporting evidence of capability was going to get her nowhere. I found that unlikely, given she was the main protagonist. Snoekstra's images of a town on the way down were well written though I wonder if such a small town would have had a Detective Sergeant in its police station (that credibility factor again). There are some interesting twists in the plot and these are what kept me going. The end is truly a crescendo though with some elements of deus ex machina.
