  • Intricate and lovely read!

Wow, I can’t wait to see more from this author. Lovely characterization, and the world felt like something I haven’t seen before. There were several scenes that were just heartstoppingly beautiful. I had some trouble following the way the magic worked— there were times when the plot hinged on some detail about curses, and some of it was so dense that I just kind of nodded and moved on. But that’s a small quibble and might resolve on a reread.

I enjoyed this book a lot, especially the relationships between the characters. The complex feelings they have for and about each other always seem true. I had trouble following the convolutions of the magic system with its curses & virtues (simplifying to avoid spoilers here) but I still do recommend this lovely whodunnit/love story, and the resolution was just brilliant.

  • Lord of the Last Heartbeat

LORD OF THE LAST HEARTBEAT is the first book in the Sacred Dark series, and we focus on Mio and Rhodry. Both of these have secrets and 'powers' that have an effect on their lives. Mio no longer wants to 'help' his mother, but can't see a way out. Rhodry is intrigued by the younger man, but fears trying anything due to the curse he is living under. What a fantastical world Ms Peterson has invented, with a hint of American Civil War era, coupled with the English Victorian period, this was a great combination of worlds. And yes, I realise I may have the time periods wrong, but that is what it reminded me of! I loved how the story for both Rhodry and Mio came out slowly, the reader learning bits and pieces of it until it all fell together. Their relationship was the same way, a slow burner with temptation and resistance. This was an intriguing tale, with plenty of mystery and misdirection thrown in. An amazing cast of characters helps to move the story along. A wonderful start to the series, and I can't wait to see what happens next. Absolutely recommended by me.

  • Enjoyable read

❄️ BOOK REVIEW ❄️ Thanks to @netgalley for my ARC for an honest review. This book has so many good points. It touches on the paranormal, magic and LGBTQ issues. I really loved the relationship between Mio & Rhodry it’s so sweet and really feels true. I adore the ghosts and I absolutely hate Seraphina! So the characterisation is fab! The scene setting was a little basic and a little confusing at times. There was a tree in the cellar....not sure how that works but hey there you go! The story had a lot of promise and had real moments of ‘wow!’ But it just left me wanting something more, it was a little jumbled at times and felt a little rushed in places. I had to fill in some gaps with assumptions. However that said I still enjoyed this book and it has lots of good stuff going on. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

A good fantasy, engrossing and entertaining. I appreciated the world building, the character development (I rooted for them) and the plot that kept me interested till the end. I look forward to reading other books by this author. Recommended! Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
