  • Riveting & Exciting!

A thrilling crime series and I have so enjoyed this fourth novel! Now that Gaby is acting DI, her days are no easier; her latest case is that of a 10 year old girl who has gone missing from her home. The big question is, did she run away or is there something more sinister behind her disappearance? And, as if one case wasn’t enough to keep the team fully occupied, there is the matter of a local cremation which produces proof that there was more than one body among the ashes. Another enigma to add to the list. The only way to solve both cases is to follow the evidence – but what if they are connected? I’m rather fond of Gaby Darin; she manages to juggle life and career whilst dealing with the ordinary problems which face us all. These are complicated cases and I found myself fully engrossed quite quickly, reading long after I should have tucked myself under the duvet. This is a really enigmatic read – I suspected everyone (or so I thought) but still didn’t get it right. With twists and turns galore, Gaby manages to cope with office politics whilst keeping an eye on those under her care and never lacking in the attention she gives to her current workload. As always, the author has created an entirely plausible and rather puzzling scenario for the reader to really get their teeth into; this is proving to be a cracking series to follow and I find myself already looking forward to the next one. Riveting and exciting from beginning to end, this is one I’m delighted to recommend and give five full sparkling stars.

  • A must read!

A runaway 10 year old girl. A missing older woman. A homeless teenager. Artificial hips from a crematorium. Jenny O’Brien weaves all four together in Lost Souls, the fourth in the excellent Gaby Darin police procedural mysteries. When Elly Fry is reported missing by her distraught mother, acting DI Gaby Darin and her team know they must work around the clock to find the missing 10 year old. She’s been seen with an older boy who is linked to an earlier case. Then a worker from the crematorium reports an odd and disturbing discovery. Three older women are worried when their friend disappears before their scheduled card game. As Gaby’s case load increases, she worries that she has no time to spend on her growing relationship with pathologist Rusty Mulholland. And she knows that she has to make a decision about her career that will affect her entire team. Time is running out. This series just keeps getting better! Character driven and well-plotted with many clues hidden in small details, Lost Souls can be read as a standalone thriller. Readers of the previous Gaby Darin books will enjoy descriptions of Gaby trying to befriend Rusty’s young son, of Jax’ career development, of Owen’s life as the father of a newborn, and Marie’s growing independence. This is a must read series. 5 stars. Thank you to NetGalley, HQ Digital and Jenny O’Brien for this ARC.

  • interesting case

This was a fast past read and had alot going on. We first get into the dissapearance of a 10 year old girl name Elodie. She runs away from home after seeing something in the shed at the edge of her property. There is also the strange case of a creamatorium finding 3 metal hip replacements in the creamatory.. As people don't generally have 3 legs this was very very suspicious. I did think that the second case was definitely a more interesting one to follow. We do follow alot of different perspectives. I think 4 or 5 different people and it seemed like to many which I think made me have a hard time connecting with the characters.. With all of the different characters the story also did feel a bit disjointed at times. When we finally figure out how the cases connect it was definitely a surprise. I hadn't read any other books in the series and had no trouble figuring out what was going on. While I didn't totally love this book, I would definitely check out other books by this author and in this series.

  • Love this series!

How are we already at instalment 4 in this amazing series? It astounds me that each book I read from it, is like reading the opening blockbuster, not a followup in a series. This is such a credit to Jenny O’Brien that she is able to still keep it fresh and Lost Souls is no exception. Once again she smashes it out of the park and has delivered another outstanding read. Lost Souls sees Detective Gaby Darin step up to acting DI where she is faced with not one or two but 3 what seem to be unrelated cases, that of a missing 10 year old child, an elderly woman, and the discovery of someones remains mixed up in another ones ashes! Whhhaaattt??? Boy does Gaby and her team have their work cut out for them in this one… I mentioned in my review for instalment 3 (Fallen Angel) that this one was my favourite to date in the series, but Lost Souls has surpassed this! After I buckled up and got comfortable, knowing that anytime I read a book from Jenny O’Brien it is going to be an all nighter, I was taken on one very wicked and twisty ride as I was transported into the pages alongside Detective Gaby Darin in helping solve these cases. It wasn’t easy by any means! Jenny O’Brien keeps her cards very close to her chest in this one. I hope that this review has not only enticed you to read Lost Souls, but also the other 3 books in this brilliant series, if you haven’t already. It really doesn’t get any better than this one. Each tale is masterfully plotted, perfectly written and researched, always has a cast of first class characters, even the undesirable ones, and just delivers each and every-time. It really is the whole package!

  • Wow! What a thriller!

I don’t think I’ve read something this much of a cliffhanger in years! The storyline is great. For a police procedural, it read more like a major thriller. Lots of characters and they are well written.
