"Lucy out of Bounds" by Nancy N. Rue

This book is brilliant for both tomboys & girly-girls! It's aimed at girls aged 9-12, but I still read it even though I'm a few years older than intended. The main character Lucy is beginning the years where she's not quite a little girl anymore, but certainly not anywhere near being an adult. Her blind father is trying to carefully guide her through these somewhat confusing years. All Lucy wants is for her dad to let her tryout for the Olympic Training Program, but he thinks she's not mature enough yet, & wants her to prove that she is first. Lucy sort of begins to think that getting into the training program is all that she wants, but when when her best friend runs away, she realises that he, & all their other friends are way more important to her than getting into the program!
