    A wartime story

Took a while to get into but became a fascinating insight into life among gangsters in USA during the war. Also a somewhat unknown occupation for women of the time - diving for the US navy. All woven round a family with their handicapped daughter. Good read.

    Original and evocative opening

The first two thirds of the book are excellent. The wartime setting is evoked particularly well and the characters are interesting. However, I felt the final third lacked the originality of the start.
