  • Not quite Chandler but charming

I'd just read a later book in this series and decided I liked it enough o begin at the beginning. Kerr has modelled his hero on Raymond Chandler and the wisecracks initially come more frequently than they might. But it's a compelling backdrop and Gunther is a plausibly flawed lead. If you think Los Angeles is cynical and its authorities corrupt then Nazi Berlin makes LA look as pure as a mountain stream. Gunther does what he has to to survive but retains a core of decency. As you might expect, violence is quite frequent and often brutal, but Gunther's (and the author's) humanity somehow takes the edge off it. Other reviewers have said this series just gets better and I will be back for more.

  • Très bonne fiction: intelligente, bien écrite et à suspens

Le contexte historique est très bien décrit, et sert une intrigue policière plutôt bien conçue. Je vais lire la suite!

  • Dark and gripping

A tour through the underbelly of Nazi Germany during the days before WWII that leaves the reader feeling as if they have actually been there. A rich cast and a terrifying and twisting plot make it difficult to put down.

  • Bernie - the anti-authoritarian nuisance ex-policeman amid ultra-authoritarian pre-war Nazi Germany

A world going mad - as the best and worst of patriotism and pragmatism conspire to dull the morality and sense of the noble German culture. Bernie, a former policeman become private investigator, specialises in finding missing persons. So business is set to pick-up, yet Bernie has an unfortunate knack for uncovering more than he is meant to. His habit for humour in moments of danger endear him to enemies and readers alike, and his artitude of anti-authority within an ultra-authoritan regime makes him the heroic nuisance we all wish to be.
