  • Great summer read

A sweet coming-of-age story, with a nice mix of pathos & heart. Recommended.

  • Fun and Entertaining

Mary Jane is 14 in 1970 and takes a summer nanny job that will change her life. It was right in my wheelhouse as I was 15 in 1970 so much was familiar. Great story, well told. You really root for Mary Jane!

  • Endearing

This was a very easy and nice read, somewhat endearing and entertaining, but I can’t say that I was overjoyed like so many readers. I think that my main disappointment was that this book was being compared to Daisy Jones and The Six, by Taylor Jenkins Reid, which was a book that at the end I was totally emotionally involved. That did not happen here, not even the 70’s atmosphere (if there was one). Don’t get me wrong. I loved the writing and how the author was able to construct a world around a 14 year old girl and show us her perspective. I enjoyed being inside of that girl’s head who, at the end, realized her parents were racists. The storyline felt more like a sitcom and almost nothing really happens. At least noting that I could call fascinating. I was expecting a mind blowing drama. There are some funny moments and dialogues, but not good enough to win my heart. I think that this is one of those books that works better as audiobook, although I’m not sure if I could handle all that shouting.

    Thanks for your feedback!
