  • I wouldnt read again

I didn't like this book. It was very difficult to follow the storyline as the author goes off on long winding detours before returning back to the main focus by which point you have forgotten what was going on. I willed myself to finish this but only cos I was being stubborn and thinking there has to be more and a conclusion. But I felt there was none. There was many times where I felt is this long description ever going to end, I didn't feel a lot of it was relevant and numerous bits of information were just repeatitive. I kept finding myself saying come on get back to the story as the core storyline was interesting just far too many detours to keep me intrigued. Very unlikely I would read from this author again and I wouldn't recommend to my friends which is a shame because this could have been so much better.

  • Didn’t finish

As a premise the book sounds really interesting, and initially I was really drawn in. As it went on however, I found the style of writing quite long, tedious, and hard to read. Each sentence would ramble on and on and the story just didn’t seem to be progressing. I went back to it a few times hoping to get into it but eventually had to give up.

  • Outstanding!

I can see why it won the Booker Prize. Fresh, pognant, witty, thoughtful in a unique first-person style. Great insights into the Troubles, mysogyny, the 70s, adolescence. I could go on.

  • Outstanding Audio Book.

I listened to the Audio book and I loved it. A friend of mine who usually enjoys the same books as me struggled to read the book and I wondered if the language/dialect is easier to listen to than read. There was the odd moment while listening that I felt relieved I had chosen audio as I could imagine it being hard to read. The accent of the narrator was a pleasure to listen to. I can see why the subject matter may be slightly disturbing to some people but that shouldn't influence an analysis of the standard of writing. The writing style was original with great hits of humour. Highly recommended.

  • Dreadful writing

I really disliked both the story and the writing style [ pedestrian]and abandoned reading after several attempts to get further than the first few chapters. certainly wont buy any of this authors work in future.
