  • Still going strong

Being an Alaskan, I expected to be critical of this series. I was pleasantly surprised by a story that was very approachable whether you lived here or not. The first book was landmark heavy but that did not distract from the very well written characters and their realistic responses to fantastical situations. This third installment is still very well written. I'd say that there were more "throw away" characters in this book than in the others but those that stay become full bodied and fully imagined. Despite an initially large cast, the characters come to life. You could argue a slightly more political slant in this book but I really don't agree. There are those of the "prepper" mentality that may attempt to be offended but I was not. I saw characters that took advantage of their situation (albeit rather evilly) and let the control manipulate them. Those characters were a little outlandish but they were not completely unrealistic--I could see people going this same way. Because of more disposable cast, this book, while not tame, didn't have the same impact as the first two, with the characters we were brilliantly led to care about. That is not to say this book is lacking. It is at a different pace (actually, several) and at a different location which lends itself to different circumstances. The progression is good and logical by the main characters though some of the supporting cast have questionable judgement. Overall I very much enjoyed this book though it didn't give me the stunned satisfaction as the first two did when my low expectations were so thoroughly shattered. It did maintain my expectations, though, and I am eagerly anticipating the fourth and final (no!) installment.

  • Panic sucks

Yep....A great read and a fitting chapter in this Alaska story. Love the backdrop and looking forward to more. It was the best one yet.
