  • Not as good as the ITV series

I greatly enjoyed the ITV series, so was hoping for a bit more depth by reading the books. I was a little disappointed that the characters seem less developped and somewhat flatter on the page than on the screen. The book lacks a defining story arc, instead offering largely self-contained episodic chapters. Although certain characters do appear several times, I felt little emotional attachment to them, though I suspect that might have been a deliberate interpretation of Hornblower's character. The stories themselves are engaging, though, especially if you're not familiar with the TV series. I suspect the other books may contain further military stratergy that may prove this book to be a worthy introduction of the character. On its own merit, though, I'd say this book's screen adaptation was, unusually, an improvement over the original.

  • Like an old friend

I first read "Mr. Midshipman Hornblower" when I was in my early teens and i have revisited it numeris times since. As with any book rereading reflects the llife experience since the last reading. That makes the book new again. My knowledge of Spain, the Mediterain and North Africa has growen so that I can more fully appreciate Forester's eye for landscape and seascapes. Furthermore his supporting characters always ring true. Like any good book it grows with the reader .

  • Still a good read.

I read these books when I still at School - now I'm retired they are still a good read. Dear Kobo: If you want a review in future, lower the minimum character-count.
