Excellent. It sent me back to check my Australian history, which the book brought to life again for me.

  • an absorbing read

Very enjoyable, an historic novel describing much of what Lachlan Macquarie must have felt during his governship of NSW seen through the eyes of his loving wife; Mrs M also felt the strain whilst getting a deep affection for the southland but feeling neglected by her husband, who was immersed in his mission but also remained 'faithful' to his first deceased wife. Mrs M sought solace elsewhere, with 'The Architect', but it was never consumated. A delightful re-imagination of history written in a very readable style

  • Well written and interesting.

This novel opened my eyes to early Sydney as a colony. Beautifully written and a engaging storyline.

An interesting slant on Australian early history. It gains strength in the latter chapters but mixing fact with fiction sometimes does not do Justice to the characters.
