    A deeply troubling book

This book troubled me. What goes on in the creative mind of a young, male author, that he can write a novel about profound human dysfunction and describe the depravity of the characters in such explicit and shocking detail? What causes him to even want to write such a story and for what purpose? I don't care about people saying this story celebrates the strength of the human spirit in overcoming adversity, because I just didn't see it that way. What I read was a story of an early teenage girl being violently emotionally, physically and sexually abused by her father, with an equally creepy cast of other men whose leering sexuality was implicit. Even the safe characters, which included a boy of similar age, were sexualised in some way or had some abusive element in their lives. I've read a lot of violence in books and consider myself to be broad-minded and strong, but certain scenes in this book were so depraved and shocking that I actually felt sick. I don't understand why the abuse scenes had to be described in such explicit detail, with language and anatomical descriptions worthy of a hard core pornographic movie. As the story progressed, I became progressively disgusted in myself for having been drawn in as if I was viewing a train crash. I wanted it to end so I felt some justice, but there was no justice in the screwed up situation. With respect to the author for his quality writing style, I seriously wonder about his state of mind and what dark things exist in his life to make him write this way. This is his first book. I will not be reading any more. This type of literature gives call to classifications, like movies, that warn people about confronting content.

    A hard read

This book got me in despite not being pleasant to read. Confronting subject matter, events and language were challenging although the writing was reasonably easy to follow and very descriptive.
