This is ML Buchman’s first ful-length novel in the Hendersons’ Ranch series, a spin-off of the original Night Stalkers series (and following the short stories Christmas on Henderson's Ranch, Reaching Out at Henderson's Ranch and Welcome at Henderson's Ranch). In true Buchman form, he paints his characters, environments and events well, and before long we are drawn into the emerging love story of Nathan, the confused chef, and Julie, the cowgirl / construction worker. The ranch is staffed with characters introduced in the short stories, plus we get to see more of Mark & Emily from the Night Stalkers series in a different light, which is interesting and occasionally hilarious (I loved the ‘fly-fishing’ scene!). Buchman made it onto my auto-buy list some years ago, with the Night Stalkers’ White House trilogy. He never fails to paint characters that we can actually picture or relate to in some way (even if they at times seem a bit superhuman), meaning that we care and/or identify with their trials, tribulations and – hopefully – their happy endings. This book was more down-to-earth, featuring realistic leads in Julie & Nathan; no major drama, just two people looking for change and discovering each other, but I really enjoyed it and hope to read more Ranch novels in the future. *I received a free copy of this title from the publisher in exchange for an honest review."
