  • Cindy's ghost house

Night After Night is a welcome return to the ghost story by Phil Rickman after his excursions into historical fiction with his Dr Dee Elizabethan novels. Sitting in tone somewhere between his early horror novels and the later crime/mystery works of his Merrily Watkins books, Night After Night sees the return of characters from Rickman's Will Kingdom books. The humour of the Kingdom books is lacking here , despite an at-first-glance absurd set-up, but the novel does contain a nice air of eeriness as sense of menace in the haunted house builds. Readers expecting an all-out supernatural action finale will be disappointed but there is enough here to remind readers of what they enjoyed in books like Man in the Moss and December.

  • Phil Rickman Night After Night

As ever Mr Rickman gives us a great story, great plotting, good writing and a wonderful feel for the ancient magic of the border counties.
