  • Funny and sad at the sad time

I read "A Tiny Bit Marvellous" and enjoyed it so was expecting something in the same vein with "Oh Dear Silvia". I admit that I wasn't gripped at first, it was only once Tia made her first entrance that I got into the book... without her there wouldn't be much real comedy and I'm glad she's there, the book would have been very heavy without her. All in all I grew to love it and would recommend it to anyone, granted I didn't really understand the reasoning behind Silvia's actions, but people do strange things sometimes. I got quite misty eyed at the end... and the final chapter is heartbreakingly sad. Well done, Dawn French... I can't wait for your next book :0)

  • This is not a review, as such, but a full blown confession. I started reading this a couple of days ago on my iPad, propping the tablet on a book pillow on the controls of the treadmill walking machine. I knew that reading something would keep my mind off this very necessary but boring exercise. I've always enjoyed Dawn French on TV and also her books I've previously read. But this one has really moved me. I couldn't put it down (but I did get off the machine now and then and swipe through the pages in bed or with coffee). Just now i finished it, about 10 minutes after the walking program automatically shut down. I hardly noticed I'd stopped walking. I stood here on the machine reading the last chapters, flicking through pages, tears rolling, full of love of (nearly) all the characters - as they say, I just HAD to finish it. Such an interesting, different story, but achingly familiar to anyone who's lost someone near and dear, yet also funny and positive. If you like something with the real human touch and with a strong dose of British humor and irony, don't miss this. I, and my slightly less flabby bod, thank Dawn and Penguin and Kobo.

  • Dawn's first book 'A Tiny Bit Marvellous' was funny, engaging and a real page turner... what went wrong this time? The characters were flat, uninteresting and worst of all unbelievable. All of this would ok if it was at least half way funny. I do admit I found the mystery of Silvia at least interesting enough to finish the book, as such I give this book 2 stars. If you want something funny and engaging please look elsewhere. I hope Dawn's next book is truly awesome as I know they can be.

  • Good funny read but sad

Was truly hoping she would pull through in the end. But a good read.
