  • Terrible book

This is the worst historical biography I have ever read. Reading this book is like trying to iron treacle. It opens with an overview of the religious background that I'm sure could only be understood by somebody with a degree in mediaval and early protestant theology. He references numerous theologians, philosiphies, sects and religious tracts, but makes no attempt to explain who or what they are. All of this is written in a convoluted style that makes it dense and defies understanding. He continues with a waffling, cackhanded style that prevents understanding. As an example, in a sentence that lasts a whole paragraph, he describes the marriage of one of Cromwell's daughters. He goes round the houses so much, that even after re-reading the paragrap several times, I could not work out which of the two men mentioned she actually married. As if to prove how smart he is, the author has littered the book with hundreds of words that I'm sure haven't seen the light of day simce the Victorian era. Every page had at least two words I had to look up the meaning of, and many of them were not in there. Throw in numerous French, German, Italian, Spanich and Latin words and phrases, and the many unexplained references to philosophers, theologians, politicians, royals, with the assumption that the reader knows who they are and what the reference means, and various unexplained philosophies, theories, religious dogmas and religious movements, and I basically had no idea what the author was getting at a lot of the time. Don't waste your time like I did.

  • Love it

I kove this version. Eventhough English is not my native language, it was very readable. I would like to get a hard ccpy to put on the shelf.
