  • Wonderful Series

Packs A Powerful Punch!! Chief of Police in Painters Mill, Kate Burkholder is my favorite ex Amish police officer. It's no secret I love this series. This installment was a little different but no less intense. The characters are so vivid they jump off the page. This was another action packed from start to finish edition. This series just gets better with every book. A woman from Kate's past shows up wounded and on the run. She needs Kate's help. Adam Lengacher finds Gina Colorosa while he is on a sleigh ride with his children. He thinks shes dead. A huge snow storm, power, police corruption and greed are the backdrop of this 12th book. Tomasetti plays a larger role than he has in a while which makes it even better. Sammy stole the show. I received a Advance Reader Copy of this book from #NetGalley, the publisher and the author in exchange for an honest review

  • Past Deep in Snow

Love this series! Best to start it from the beginning or you will loose the characters evolution. Kate is a police Chief in Painters Mill Ohio with an Amish upbringing. This tale finds a blizzard hampering travel and leaves Kate with a difficult situation to solve while staying on an Amish farm owned by Adam Lengacher. Kate's love interest John of course makes some snow mobile appearances to help her out. Just cannot wait much longer for a more indepth look into this couple's future. Great action and characters fill all of a Linda Castillo story. "A copy of this book was provided by St. Martin's Press via NetGalley with no requirements for a review. Comments here are my own views."

  • A great addition to a great series

"Outsider" is the latest in Linda Castillo's mystery series featuring Police Chief Kate Burkholder of Painters Mill, Ohio. In this latest mystery, Gina Colorosa, an old friend of Kate's and also a police officer, is on the run and seeks out Kate's help. Gina is given refuge at the farm of Amish widower Adam Lengacher while Kate checks out the story told by Gina about the incidents within Gina's police force which forced her to flee. "Outsider" is an absorbing story which keeps the reader's interest from beginning to end. An excellent read.

  • A suspenseful tale!

Outsider by Linda Castillo is the 12th A Kate Burkholder Novel. It can be read on its own for those new to the series, but I recommend reading this suspenseful series in order. I thought Outsider was well-written with developed characters and it moves along at a fast pace. Outsider starts off with a bang in the prologue with Gina Colorosa, a vice unit cop from Columbus, on the run after a no-knock warrant is executed at 3 a.m. on her home. Gina was prepared for this action and was able to escape, but she was shot in the shoulder. Gina knows only one person whom she can trust and that is Kate Burkholder. Adam Lengacher, an Amish widower with three children, rescues Gina and takes her into his home. Kate is shocked when she sees Gina because it has been ten years since they parted. Kate would not have become a police officer if not for Gina. Gina tells Kate about corruption within the police force in Columbus. There is suspense, action, mystery, and intrigue in Outsider. You wonder if Gina is disclosing all the information to Kate, who is involved in the corruption, and what will happen next. There is graphic violence in Outsider and along with an extensive amount of foul language (fair warning). I thought Outsider was more violent than the earlier books in A Kate Burkholder series. I like that we get to learn more about what happened to Kate after she left home, her time at the academy, and her early years on the force in Columbus. We also discover why Kate has not spoken to Gina in ten years. There are some cute moments in Outsider as well. Adam’s three kids are sweet. Sammy was my favorite. He is a curious boy. There was a calf who had been spurned by his mama that needed nurturing. I like the relationship between Kate Burkholder and John Tomasetti. They manage to balance their work and their private life. I liked the author’s descriptive writing which brought the scenes to life. I enjoyed the vivid word imagery of the sleigh ride especially. I like the glimpses of Amish life which felt authentic. Outsider is a suspenseful novel with a cute calf, a well-proportioned widower, a friend on frightful footing, substantial snowfall, corrupt cops, an auto accident, and a barrage of bullets.

  • When the past comes calling....

The past comes calling in, Outsider, the latest novel by Linda Castillo. Good cop? Bad cop? Can you believe an old friend and colleague when you left your first department because of the way she was using her position to gain money and perceived power? She's now in your town, injured, in the midst of a blizzard. You can't arrest her and take her in. Her story of high level police corruption is terrifying. You believe her, maybe, but then again she might be playing you. Now you're both hunkered down in the home of a widowed Amish man and his children. Will her presence make these innocents, targets? So many questions! Outsider is a deliciously suspenseful read. Chief Burkholder is once again in the middle, with her significant other, Tomasetti, lending support and digging deeper using his state connections. Something is going on and it's bigger than Gina's issues. I love the author's writing style. She knows police procedure, and makes the suspense palpable. Using a blizzard to keep the main characters in one place and therefore vulnerable, is chilling. There are so many what ifs in the book, leading you down one path, then turning it around perfectly. I can't wait for the next Kate Burkholder book!
