  • Heartwarming

The book was captivating and down to earth. A truly good read which I finish in 2 days. However the ending could have been more meaningful

  • Modern history in a novel

A fascinating story of life for Koreans living in Japan and the discrimination they endured, with an underlying insight into how Korea became divided into North and South Korea and the hardships all Koreans endured. A family's life told with sensitivity; a part of history that is is important for us to understand.

  • Enthralling

I loved this book with its rich characters and storyline over generations and historical events. I got a shock when it finished as I hadn’t been paying attention to where I was in the book, I wanted it to go on and on.

  • Pachinko

Simplistic style of book depicting the troubles caused by Japanese oppression throughout many generations of a rural family from early to late 20th century. A fascinating insight into the cultural and historical facts of the time.

  • An incredible premise ruined

The first half of this book was incredible , I cannot commend it enough. It adeptly crafted an immersive narrative that wed history with the story and its key messages - beyond this it had issues with pacing, shallow messages, muddled/uninterestimg characters and masochistic writing - an unfortunate end
