  • Nostalgic, but feels redundant

The first parts of the novel are easily the strongest, with dear Harkel Harpell adding plenty of humour and Cadderly of the Spirit Soaring providing an alternate point on the spectrum of evil where menzoberranzan resides. However, the tale feels like a repeat, with nearly every element aside from a surprise twist at the end and some seafaring wizards in the beginning bringing a sense of 'been here before'. The characters start to feel immortal and emotionally linear, with no developing intimacy between a hero and heroine in spite of years alone and apparently obvious chemistry. The end of the story is particularly weak, having an all to familiar feeling of 'find the figurine, set a plan for a journey of solitude only to have old friends pipe up with obvious camaraderie. But still, the intricacies of the barbarian politics and the unshakable connectivity to this tabletop similar band of heroes demands one to press on alongside them in their ongoing adventures.

  • Greatness expected and delivered

R.A. Salvatore may very well be the modern JRR Tolkien. His books are all truly immersive and thoroughly entertaining. This book did not disappoint at all.
