  • Pel and the Faceless Corpse

I really enjoyed this police procedural set in rural France two decades after WWII. Pel is the quirky hypochondriac detective charged with solving the murder of an unknown man found at the foot of a shrine to a group of resistance fighters who had been shot by the Nazis. Was it significant that the victim's body lay there?

  • Another intriguing addition to the Pel stories

Another good quality story set in the Burgundy region of France in the late '70s. Pel is an interesting character, though I could do with less of his conflicts with his live in housekeeper. His fellow officers are well drawn. The story in this case goes back to the war years, with enough twists and revelations to keep you involved all the way.
