Down to earth fantasy, with dubious physics

3.5 stars rightly Pros: - excellent narration instils life in every character. The voices he gives to the chef and the old maid... - great characters - down to earth style is refreshing - (gun)powder magic involves snorting said powder. That's an interesting dynamic. It has a substantial impact on the characters, too. - the intrigue - internally consistent with his system of magic Cons: - there is a nice blend of magic and physics, but some basic principles are broken without explanation. Such as a bullet firing outside a gun. I can accept magic. I can't accept the projectile would have any power with an undirected explosion. That's what the barrel is for. - tension is undermined at times with an over dependence on numbers and rank of opponents, rather than capabilities. - magic is arbitrary, when first introduced. Powers are often described as they happen when they'd have been served better earlier.
