  • Another great ranger story

Great light reading. Adventure, a bit of suspense, but not unnecessarily littered with brutality, gore or sadistic violence like so many otber writers today. Wish we had more writers with this style.

  • Interesting at beginning and end but only liked half of the middle middle

It started off real good with good dialogue and action but then once we get to the middle during the 'princess chapters' the pace of the story unknowingly slows down to a snail's pace. I know the author wanted to include mystery and intrigue but it really didn't work out that well. As always the combat scenes and battle tactics are nice but castle mystery is not one of John Flanagan's fortes'. Around the last couple chapters things speed up again. Also the antagonist this time just felt weak, both character wise and strength wise (he just seemed pretty weak compared to previous antagonists). Overall I'd say this book is not as good as previous installments by John Flanagan, a good comparison would be going from the lord of the rings movies to the hobbit movies. This book just doesn't match the level of its predecessors, but it's still ok.
