(4.5) Loved this one. I wish there was more of Hershey but when he is on the pages I am all in. Rowan our wounded ex military who works for Titanium Corp is on the search for Hershey, in fire devastated California. He brings strength, compassion and intelligence to this story. Brandi, who he runs into on his search, works for a Stem cell research Lab and has suffered numerous loss and heart break. I was a little flummoxed to her response when first meeting Rowan. Not the hesitation, heck they are strangers, but when he asked if she was searching for a lost pet. Dale does an exemplary job laying out the devastation from the fire through Rowans eyes. I felt like I could see it, feel the loss. There is a mystery, well done enough that I thought several people who were supposed to be "good" would turn out to be in on some of it. I love when I read a book at has heroes 4 legged and 2, but the cherry on top was the intrigue, the mystery - not angst between the couple. I am thrilled to receive this arc and freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions. Thank you Dale Mayer, thank you Booksprout.

  • Fantastic!

This story is full of suspense and excitement right from the start! The California wildfires have devastated this small community in the worst way, leaving a great portion of its people homeless and numerous injured or dead, including the domestic pets and wildlife. Things turn ugly when someone starts taking potshots at Brandi. Brandi is now homeless, lost her dear grandmother and her beloved dog, Lacey all in one day because of the intense fire that ripped through the community. The unexpected murder of her grandmother’s lawyer has Brandi and Rowan nervous about their own safety and the mysterious people watching them has them taking every precaution. They have a huge puzzle to solve revolving around the fire and Brandi’s grandmother and her death. Who could possibly want her grandmother dead? Did she die in the fire or before? How heartbreaking to think Brandi’s grandmother couldn’t get away from the fire and perished. This has all the feels surrounding this very thought. This entire scenario tugs at your heartstrings. His original mission was to find the War Dog, Hershey, but Rowan finds so much more. The devastation of the fires are all too real in our area of the country. I love how Brandi has a champion in Rowan and the patience and care Rowan takes to save Hershey and Lacey as well as her pups and get them the medical attention they need. Not only does Rowan find his K9 partner, but he finds his life partner in Brandi as well. This turns out to be a good, emotional, love story all around!

  • Great read

This is book 10 in Dale Mayer's K9 series and they keep giving, leaving the reader with a warm glow. Rowan Chadwick had been a dog handler, whilst on a mission with his navy SEAL team he received life altering injuries and his beloved dog Hershey was passed on to another handler. Rowan entered the office of the Titanium Corps and was informed of Hershey's disappearance, he had bolted when wildfires spread through the state where he was to spend his retirement , Rowan needed a new purpose in life and this was it, he was determined to find his faithful old friend. Brandi Malcolm was alone after her beloved grandmother had died when her house had was engulfed by wildfire, Brandi's pregnant dog, Lacey had disappeared and with heavy heart she searched. After a chance meeting it made sense for Brandi and Rowan to join forces in their search but all wasn't what it seemed, someone wanted Brandi dead, but who and why ? Rowan was going to protect Brandi and love blossomed but their lives were in danger. This is a really enjoyable story illustrating the love and respect between man and dog.
