  • Sailing to Sarantium

Understanding this novel as a fictioalised fantasy of a particular age in history is helpful in not being distracted by some elements from the main thrust of the tale/s being told. The author has great ability to draw vivid images in words. As a non fantasy reader, I look forward to reading more in this series.

  • Beautiful and poignant

The first book in a two book series set in lands based on ancient Rome and Byzantium. The Western region of Batiara is in crisis. The king has died and although his daughter is on the throne, she is under threat, both from within, and at risk of invasion from the huge Sarantine empire to the east. It tells the tale of a mosaicist called Crispin who travels from Batiara to Sarantium to work on the ceiling of the huge new temple being built, and how he gets embroiled in the political machinations that start to take place. Guy Gavriel Kay's prose is beautiful, and the story is so poignant. These are not books that you read to get to the end, but rather to savour every page.
